The history about the surname Ceresani

The history about the surname Ceresani I suppose should be a classical question that involved all the Ceresani surname’s owner spread around the world.

I’m going to explain the root about the surname based on a personal research helped by another research followed by the urbino university ( www.uniurb.it)

All the original ethnicity and etymology of surnames are very difficult to determinate, even our surname will respect this rule and I have decided to follow the probability theory enhanced by the forces that driven a settlement.

Generally speaking the root should came from working skill of the “clan” or special features, or historical issue.

Keep in mind that some surname came about organically and independently in different locales; for example, in the case of names that come from professions , which can crop up in multiple places independently (such as the family name "carpenter " which was given to people of that profession and so on..).

pointing out about our common surname.

To be honest the sources to find the Ceresani’s meaning are very poor like you should imagine, but performing a selection from the root and the history we’ll discover an amazing story that should be very close to the truth.

Obviously Ceresani came from Italy, See map.. 113 Ceresani are spread-out all over Italy, and 72 of them are settle in marche area  (see red area)

Underlining about the correct Italian pronunciation (helping the Ceresani’s owner around the world) here below an example:

C must be pronunciated like the c in charlie sound,

E must be pronunciated like the e in echo sound

R like romeo sound

E …. Like echo

S like sun

A like alpha

N like November

I likeindiasound

And now let’s try to find out the roots of the surname:

  • Cerasa in Italian slang means cherry, and Ceresani should be lead to the people involved about the pick-cherry worker, or dealer of, but this thesis must be refused because the cherry production in Italy is not behold in the marche area.
  • Cere means even “wax” and could conduct us to the meaning of the wax-workers, or dealer of, but for the some reason reported on the point 1, we cannot accept this theory.
  • Luceres, Proceres and Cerere should be a charming roots but honestly … the percentage probability from my point of view are very little.  Luceres is one of the three family’s name that founded Rome. (Ramnes, Tities and Luceres as a root from latin lucus that mean tribe from the wood ) and Proceres : latin root, means “head of tribes”. Cerere, in the latin religion was a female god dedicated to the earth and the fertility. The Cerere’s follower could be called with a nickname twisted during the ages into Ceresani. (anyway Cerere arise from greek religion with the original name of Demetra)
  • Ceres was the surname of an old and noble Spanish family settled in the south of Italy around the XV° century d.c. (around Caposele city, Campania area) but any “Ceresani” descendent are still founded there.

 What else?

Refused the work link root, refused the “features of latin and Spanish charming root “ and taking in account that the higher percentage of Ceresani has got root in “marche area” who or whom pushed to settle them there? Let’s call to witness the history.

 Italy, around 800 D.C.

To resume in very extreme way, we should say that during 800 D.C. in Italy there was a period of confusion, it was a sort of no man’s land, civil wars from near cities, invaded from north by the Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Lombards and from the south by the Arabian that invaded and conquered the sicily and other areas ( for deeper private investigation I suggest to read wikipedia selecting “Italy in the middle age”).

One Arabian tribe, the “Saracen” (from now written in Italian way : Saraceni) appear too in Italy as people with a strong military ability whom were ready to combat and depredate for money. A sort of actual mercenary.

Like primary skill the enlistment of being a Saraceno, were to be taller and strongest than the average (for those days) due to offer a very strong mercenary groups used by the circumstances even by the local kings in Italy.

Cutting off about the large sections of history regarding the Italy during the early middle age,(internet is plenty of pages about it) and pointing about our research, the reader now could wondering where is the link between the Saraceni and our common surname. Please, let’s give me some more rows and time, and I’ll give you the explanation, calling again the history like a witness.

The  Saraceni during the 846 d.c. ashored at Ostia, ( the Rome’s harbour about 20 km away from the city) and they did not find any resistance and very easly reached Rome.

Once in Rome, they robbed into a couple of cathedrals located at that time outside the roman’s wall, the famous Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

These facts shocked the Pope and the Lord of the Lombards, “Ludovico”, and they cannot tolerate any other intrusion by the Saraceni in Rome, so they prepared a defence plan for the future.

Pope Leone IV was the leader of this plan and organized a sort of alliance to face the next future Saraceni hazard.

First of all he decided to reinforce and enlarge the wall around Rome (the famous Leonine wall) and waited for the next “courtesy visit” by the tribe.

The Saraceni thought to repeat the easy and tasty morsel during the 849 D.C., but there was waiting them a large naval ally wanted by the Pope, so they were defeated on the sea very close to the Ostia shore.

Most of the Saraceni retreated, others dead during the battle, but others were captured and became prisoners.

Some of the prisoners were hanged in the Ostia harbour, but the Pope stopped immediately this revenge not for religious reasons, but more simply because the prisoners were more useful alive than died.

Treated like slaves these Saraceni prisoners were forced to build-up the Leonine wall in Rome, and when the opera was terminated, they were sent to the “granary” of the Pope state in the “marche” area working like a (slaves) farmer.

During this “mandatory residence” and living neck to neck with the local settler the “Saraceni” pronounce during the age were twisted into the local slang, turning it from Saraceni to Ceresani.

Now I’m very close to quit this amazing story, maybe a lot of us has still got some Saraceni, chromosome ( brown eyes, brown hair, taller or bigger than the average, at least laying within some our ancestors)

Maybe, I’m in mistaken belief, maybe some of us should be astonished about this research, maybe …maybe maybe …

“maybe” apart, if we want to believe about this research, irony of fate, now four Ceresani are settled in Ostia, (Fabio, Lorenzo, Eleonora and Alberto) and for sure when we look at the sea now, will be impossible for us not to imagine our forefathers ashored just in front of us.

And what’s about the Ceresani spread all over the world?

A lot of Ceresani emigrate outside Italy during the ages, some of them moved in nations into the European area (e.g. France, Germany, U.K.) others crossed the atlantic ocean reaching the “new world” (South America, U.S.A. and Canada areas) but unfortunately I’m not able to prove it.

Just performing a very simple inquiry at this site: www.ellisisland.org we’ll receive back these informations: 29 Ceresani, most of them coming from marche area (Fano, Fabriano, Camerino, Cessapalombo, San Benedetto) reached the U.S.A. between the 1892-1920. (no data are available before and after these periods)

p.s. even the author root are coming from marche, exactly from Fossombrone, place that my forefather (Eleutero Ceresani, tall 6.6 feet = 2 meters) left for Rome around the end of the 1800.
